BACKGROUND:
Transfiguration of Our Lord Church was officially founded on August 16, 1911 in an area that was then referred to as Bowmanville, located on the far north side of Chicago. The Bowmanville area was comprised of a tiny village that included prairies, homes and large Budlong farms that were famous for their onions. Most of the residents were immigrant families from Poland who worked in Bowmanville as farmers. It is for this group of people that Father Wojciechowski, with the cooperation of Father Thiele, created the parish. However, the actual building, comprised of a church as well as a school, was not erected until July 14, 1912. During the period of construction, Sunday Masses were held at the Budlong Public School Hall from August 23, 1911 until July 14, 1912. Unfortunately, during the Great Depression, half of the property was sold to ensure that the Church would stay open.
Currently, Transfiguration of Our Lord Church is made up of eight staff members of whom three are Reverends. The Church serves approximately 450 families of various backgrounds. Though the larger portions of parishioners are Latinos and Filipinos, there are also numerous Caucasian parishioners, predominantly of Polish decent, that are members of the church as well. As a result, services are offered in English, Spanish and Filipino/Tagalog every week and many events are celebrated in these languages throughout the course of the year. Additionally, Transfiguration is the only parish in all of Chicago that offers services in Filipino/Tagalog.
