Lyman A. Budlong Elementary School is a Chicago Public School located in the Lincoln Square neighborhood serving a diverse student population from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. Currently, 836 students are enrolled at Budlong. 46% identify as Hispanic or Latino/a; 29% identify as White; 17% identify at Asian; 5% identify as African American or Black; 2% identify as multiracial; and 1% identify as American Indian. 79.1% of students are low-income; 7.9% are Special Education students; and 46.4% are English Language Learners (ELL).
Budlong is a member of the Autonomous Management and Performance Schools (AMPS), a CPS initiative which allows high-performing schools certain academic, programmatic and operational freedoms and flexibility. Budlong is also a part of the Math/Science/Tech Magnet Cluster Program and offers its students two fully equipped science labs, four computer labs, Specific Aptitude Programs in Physical Science and Biological Science, and Algebra to select 8th-grade students. As a multicultural school, Budlong also offers bilingual/ELL education.
In 2012, Budlong met Adequate Yearly Progress criteria as defined by federal and state laws and the No Child Left Behind legislation. 84.6% of students met or exceeded standards on the Illinois State Achievement Test (ISAT), and their student attendance rate was 94.6%.
Budlong is as concerned with the social development and fundamental needs of its students as it is their academic achievement. Through a partnership with the University of Illinois, Budlong implemented a character education curriculum, Positive Action, at all grade levels for the past six years. Through the Pennies for Peace program, the entire school rallies to collect pennies for families in need. Budlong also provides students with dental and eye exams through partnerships with the Smile Program of Mobile Dentists and Lenscrafters. Additionally, they reach more than 250 students in 1st through 8th grades through various academic and social afterschool programs, CPS’s Refugee Program, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Many of the endeavors addressing the personal and social needs of students are organized by Elizabeth Reed, Budlong’s school counselor.
